We See With Oscar Owl

Today, in our Five Senses learning journey, we turned our attention to the sense of sight. Oscar Owl helped us to practice our 'seeing' skills as we played the My Five Friends Seeing Game. This is available on the class website. Afterwards, we had fun singing the 'I Use My Eyes To See' verse from the My Five Senses Song (available on the website). Several of the children contributed ideas for things we might see with our eyes during the song. 

Oscar Owl asked the children to make a special blog post about 'Things I like to see'. The children took turns telling everyone what they like to see, and Mrs Gately typed their answers into a Word table, which we then posted to this blog. Oscar Owl had sent a special slideshow with some Magical Moving Pictures (available on class website)  for the children to see. This was quite exciting for them to watch. "It makes my eyes go funny!" was quite a common exclamation! After they recovered :) they drew and painted some of their favourite things to see. 

Afterwards, we remembered Sensible Sam, and we thought that he might enjoy looking at the wonderful artworks the children had created. "But wait!" we said, "He has NO eyes!" We decided today would be a good day to give Sensible Sam his eyes, so that he can enjoy seeing all the things that we do! We then watched and listened to a YouTube music video called 'Mr R's Eyes Song', which is also available on the class website.

Super Senses Space Update

After Mrs Gately read My Five Friends to us, we played a game where we had to remember the Friends and what their special senses were. When we were right, we pinned them on our Super Senses Space. They look good!Here is a photo we took ...

KREATIVE KOALAS with KAMERAS!

During today's exploration of the Five Senses, the Koalas made a HANDY little resource - the Hi 5 Senses Reminder - designed as a mnemonic device to help them recall their five senses. We have five senses and we have five fingers  ... okay, ten, but we only need ONE hand for this! Anyway, I thought it might be a good idea to help the children recall their five senses by linking them to their five fingers and five very cute little Friends!  These will remain at school to help the children learn the My Five Friends Five Senses Rhyme, but the template is available on the class website for the children to make another one at home if they would like to.

Introducing My Five Friends

From the Koalas:

Today we listened to a special e-book Mrs Gately wrote on the computer. It is called My Five Friends.We met Oscar Owl, Eddy Elephant, Darcy Dog, Gerry Giraffe and Monty Monkey. Mrs Gately asked us what our favourite parts were. We said:

Darcy Dog loves the garbage truck smell! Ooooo!
Eddy Elephant made a very funny noise!
Gerry Giraffe wanted to taste us! 
Monty Monkey wanted to tickle us!

Five Senses Mind-Map

Today we used our brains lots to think of lots of different words about:

our eyes and seeing

our ears and hearing

our noses and smelling

our tongues and tasting 

our hands and touching

Mrs Gately used the interactive whiteboard to write our words in a special map we used our minds for. Here it is:

Introducing the Super Senses Space & Sensible Sam

Today, we officially began our Five Senses Unit. We learned that the five senses are see, hear, smell, taste and touch. We also learned that our five senses are very important for telling us information about the world around us! Where would we be without them?! The large noticeboard closest to the mat in our classroom is our designated Super Senses Space. We will pin the Koala's very creative artworks here throughout this unit, as well as any interesting information we find out about the five senses. If you have any suggestions, these would be most welcome!
 

 
The rather plain looking fellow in the middle of the board is Sensible Sam. The children informed me, today, that Sam is missing some rather important body parts - his eyes, ears, nose, mouth, tongue and hands! As the children progress through their learning of each sense, Sam will gain these very necessary sensing organs. By the end of our Five Senses Unit, Sam will be a LOT more sensible than he is right now! We will provide you with a weekly update on our Super Senses Space, and let you know how Sensible Sam is getting along, in our class blog. However, please feel free to take a look at this space with your child when you pick them up in the afternoons. I'm sure they will be very happy to tell you all about what they have learned!
